The Indiana Ironworkers Political Action Committee, representing more than 6,000 ironworkers across Indiana, sought to update Indiana’s public works regulations to strengthen safety and workforce standards.
Specifically, the PAC pursued legislation requiring steel welds on public works projects to be performed by American Welding Society certified welders, a credential widely recognized as the industry’s gold standard.
RJL Solutions partnered with the Indiana Ironworkers PAC on a year-long educational campaign across the state. Through site visits and roundtable discussions at each Ironworkers local union, RJL Solutions helped connect legislators with ironworkers in their own communities and educate them on the importance of certified welders for public infrastructure projects.
The team also identified legislators’ individual priorities, aligned the proposal with those priorities and built a coalition of champions to carry the issue into the 2023 General Assembly Session.
RJL Solutions worked with legislators, the Ironworkers and industry partners to successfully shepherd House Bill 1211 through the legislative process with broad bipartisan support. The legislation went into effect on July 1, 2023.
